User Guidelines

Facility User Guidelines and Health and Safety Procedures

All users of the Image Resource Facility must complete a Registration Form and READ and AGREE to the User Guidelines and health and safety rules to ensure safe working practices within the facility.

All new users must receive a training session from one of the IRF technicians before booking the microscopes and equipment. This training session is free of charge.

 

Microscope and equipment booking procedures

To reserve and book microscopes and equipment please use the online booking calendar.

Microscopes are booked in 30 minute time slots. If you finish early please inform one of the facilities technicians.

Please start your session punctually and adhere to the user guidelines located with each microscope.

Please leave the microscope room tidy ready for the next user. Clean any oil from objectives and place protective cover over the microscope.

Please report any faults or problems with the microscope.

Please DO NOT consume food or bring drinks into the laboratory or microscopy areas. ALL users MUST take their lunch breaks outside of the facility.

 

Cancellation policy

If you are unable to keep the scheduled time booked on the microscope please contact the Image Resource Facility on Ext: 5218 a minimum of 4 hours prior to your booking start time so that other users may have the opportunity to use the microscope.

If you do not turn up for your scheduled time booked, and do not notify the facility of your cancellation you will be charged for the duration of your booking.

If you are booked for a morning session (between 09.00 - 13.00) please ensure you are able to keep this scheduled time, any cancellations for morning sessions must be made the day before.

 

Health and Safety

Please ensure that the following Health and Safety rules are applied when booking the microscopes and laboratory equipment to prevent any risk to students and others within the facility.

Facility core hours are 09.00 – 17.00.

BSc students may only use the facility between the hours of 09.00 - 17.00 and an IRF staff member must be present.

MRes students may use the facility between the hours of 09.00 - 18.00.

PhD/Post Doc and equivalent may use the facility between the hours of 09.00 - 18.00. Those wishing to use the microscope facility after 18.00 MUST notify reception or security that you are using the facility and provide location details.

ALL users must consume food outside of the facility.

 

Important Notice:  Outside of facility core hours Light Microscopy bookings

Users wishing to use the microscopes outside of core hours and their permitted access times must seek special permission from the facility (BSc students not applicable).

All users outside of core hours must notify reception and sign in with security that you are in the IRF, Jenner Wing, Basement, Corridor 3A (Zeiss Confocal - Room 01.57, Inverted & Upright microscopes - Room 01.58, BioRad Confocal – Atrium area).

Access is restricted at weekends. Users must first seek permission from the facility and authorisation to book the microscopes during the weekend period.
